South Yunnan. Rainy season. Permanent drizzle and rain. Thick, grey, mist hanging in the tropical air. The hillsides seem like they are slowing falling apart, exposed to the elements. The heat is all-embracing. It’s sweltering. It melts you; literally sucks the life juices out of you. April is apparently the killer month for dense heat, in May it remains a sticky 38°C to 40°C and over and often feels hotter. Heat evasion becomes a major preoccupation.

More than just golden sands

The final drive into Goa was the best part of the whole trip southwards. A 3-lane motorway stint where the 4 of us (still with Max and Alina in Tanzophant) screamed with joy to each other through the walkie-talkies we’ve been using for inter-car communication, followed by palm-fringed country lanes, through small villages with brightly painted houses, fuchsia pink or lilac recurring regularly and slowly the realisation that we’ve reached the Tropics and Tourism. Slowing down and flying high

New country, new views. After the barren, imposing mountains of Tibet we are immediately submerged into lush, green, deep gorges with the temperature rising every metre we drop. Steep hillside after hillside of terraces for farming with suspension bridges hanging like threads over the rushing rivers deep down below. Indian skins, brightly coloured sarees, spicy curries.
